Every semester here on campus we have a kind of get to know you welcome fair for all the new students on campus. It is generally a lot of fun. Different business from the community set up booths and various campus organizations also have tables set up. A large number of area churches are also represented. Almost everyone has some food or snacks to draw potential visitors.
I enjoy these things for two reasons. The first, most practically, is the free food. Last night I munched on pizza, jumbalaya, muffalata, king cake, and cheese cake. It was quite nice and didn't cost a thing. Later I went out to Café Dumonde with friends and had a large cup of hot chocolate and indulged in a little people watching.
Which brings me to the other reason I enjoy these things. I like to people watch and dip into various conversations as they go by. Last night I was hanging out with music directors and choir directors. They fell to discussing the Easter programs they were planning. Most were planning simple programs but one is planning to go all out. It is going to be the most ambitious program he has yet attempted. The comment about that was, "That's all very fine if you have the horses to pull it." "Oh, I have the horse's. This is going to be good." And so the conversation continued. Meanwhile I wandered off laughing to myself. I wonder what the good upstanding choir ladies of the church would think about being called work horses.

I would kill for some authentic jumbalaya right now. Deep southern food is one of the things I miss, living here on the plains.
Jumbalaya is one of my favorites. I'm still kind of picky about gumbo but I love jumbalaya.
Coffee and beignets at Café du Monde was one of the highlights of my business trip to New Orleans more than 10-years ago. In fact, my work coffee mug is a 'Café du Monde' mug.
That is one of my favorite things to do here also. One of these days I am going to get one of those mugs :)
Love that story!
I think I'm do an afternoon trip to du Monde's. I haven't had a beignet in a couple of years. Yummy.
Sounds like fun!
